2013 The Public Voice Civil Society Meeting

The Public Voice will hold a privacy and consumer protection meeting in conjunction with the 35th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners on Tuesday, 24 September 2013, at the the Hilton Warsaw Hotel & Convention Centre. Registration is open for the Public Voice meeting. The Data Protection Conference will take place 23-26 September 2013.

2012 The Public Voice Civil Society Meeting

The Public Voice will hold a privacy and consumer protection meeting in conjunction with the 34th Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners Conference on Monday, 22 October 2011 at the the Conrad Hotel Punta del Este Uruguay. Registration is open for the Public Voice meeting. The Data Protection Conference will take place 23-24 October 2012.

Global Internet Governance: Research and Public Policy Challenges for the Next Decade

On May 5-6, 2011, GigaNet and American University are co-hosting a conference in Washington, D.C. on "Global Internet Governance: Research and Public Policy Challenges for the Next Decade." The two-day conference, which includes key government officials and Internet policy experts, aims to engage policy makers and feature scholarly presentations on peer-reviewed papers. Topics include privacy, IP addressing, world affairs, the ICANN regime, and freedom of expression. The Public Voice recently co-sponsored an Internet townhall at the ICANN40 meeting in San Francisco to discuss emerging issues for the online community. Those who wish to attend the American University event can register online, and remote participation is available for those outside of the D.C. metropolitan area.

2010 The Public Voice Civil Society Meeting

The Public Voice will hold a privacy and consumer protection conference in conjunction with the 32nd Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners Conference on Monday, 25 October 2010 at the Crown Plaza in Jerusalem. The OECD has also scheduled a symposium on October 26 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the OECD Privacy Guidelines. The Data Protection Conference will take place on 27-29 October 2010.

US Secretary of State Backs Internet Freedom

With a heightened support for the protection of Internet freedom and privacy, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. affirming that the United States stands for a single Internet where all of humanity has equal access to knowledge and ideas. Endorsing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, she noted that terrorism and other threats “must not become an excuse for governments to systematically violate the rights and privacy of those who use the internet for peaceful political purposes”. She went a step further, noting that the US is “supporting the development of new tools that enable citizens to exercise their rights of free expression by circumventing politically motivated censorship."

Telecom Package entered into force

On December 18, 2009, the Telecom Package took effect with its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. The Package brings 12 reforms to pave way for stronger consumer rights, an open internet, a single European telecoms market. Under the ePrivacy directive, communications service providers will also be required to notify consumers of security breaches, persistent identifiers ("cookies") will become opt-in, there will be enhanced penalties for spammers, and national data protection agencies will receive new enforcement powers. Member states then have 18 months to transpose the Directive into national law.

Act Now - Take the Survey: Say NO to Biometric Identifiers

The Consumer Travel Alliance is conducting a survey of travelers attitudes toward biometric screening. This includes fingerprinting, photographs and iris scans. It will mean more time passing through international borders and require visitors to share far more information than before with border control agents. Take the survey and say NO to biometric Identifiers!

The Civil Society Madrid Privacy Declaration signed by more than 300 non for profit organizations, individuals and expert around the world called for a moratorium on the development of the implementation of new systems of mass surveillance, like "biometric identifiers." Sign now the Madrid Privacy Declaration.


Latin America: Children's Online Privacy

On December 3, 2009, the Memorandum of Montevideo was presented in Mexico DF. The general objective of the document is to contribute to promote awareness of the risks that social networking can pose to children and adolescents. The presentation of the Memorandum of Montevideo in Mexico was an opportunity to bring together representatives from industry, media, legislators, judges, parents, civil society organizations and education authorities in order to promote and encourage the adoption of public policies aimed at protecting children's online privacy.

AEDH-EDRI: European Civil Society Data Protection Award


AEDH (European Association for the Defence of Human rights) and EDRI (European Digital Rights) launch the first edition of the European Civil Society Data Protection Award (ECSDPA). The prize aims at rewarding positive initiatives contributing to the visibility and effectiveness of right to privacy and to the protection of personal data in Europe. The ECSDPA prize will be awarded each year on 28 January, as a European Civil Society contribution to the Data Protection Day.

Civil Society Groups and Privacy Experts Release Madrid Declaration, Reaffirm International Privacy Laws, Identify New Challenges and Call for Concrete Action to Safeguard Privacy

In a crisply worded declaration, over 100 civil society organizations and privacy experts from more than 40 countries have set out an expansive statement on the future of privacy. The Madrid Declaration affirms that privacy is a fundamental human right and reminds "all countries of their obligations to safeguard the civil rights of their citizens and residents." The Madrid Declaration warns that "privacy law and privacy institutions have failed to take full account of new surveillance practices." The Declaration urges countries "that have not yet established a comprehensive framework for privacy protection and an independent data protection authority to do so as expeditiously as possible." The civil society groups and experts recommend a "moratorium on the development or implementation of new systems of mass surveillance." Finally, the Declaration calls for the "establishment of a new international framework for privacy protection, with the full participation of civil society, that is based on the rule of law, respect for fundamental human rights, and support for democratic institutions." The Madrid Declaration was released at the Public Voice conference in Madrid on Global Privacy Standards. Multiple translations of the Declaration are available.

‘The Public Voice’, la più grande coalizione mondiale della società civile, organizzerà una conferenza a Madrid, Spagna, il 3 novembre 2009, per discutere degli ‘Standard Globali della Privacy in un Mondo Globale’. La conferenza si svolgerà in coordinazione con la 31ª Conferenza Internazionale Annuale dei Garanti della Privacy e della Protezione dei Dati.

Interverranno alla conferenza sia alcuni fra i principali attivisti ed esperti della comunità accademica, della protezione dei consumatori e dei diritti digitali e del sindacato, sia funzionari pubblici e rappresentanti del settore privato. Insieme, discuteranno su come mantenere alto l’interesse della comunità globale riguardo ai temi della privacy, e su come promuovere la partecipazione della società civile nei processi decisionali che hanno come obiettivo l’adozione di migliori standard globali di protezione della privacy e dei dati personali.

A civil szervezetek nemzetközi szövetsége megvitatja a magánélet védelmének globális normáit

A világ legszélesebb civil társadalmi szövetsége, a „Public Voice” 2009. november 3-án Madridban (Spanyolország) tartandó konferenciáján vitát rendez „A privacy globális normái a globális világban” címmel. A konferenciát az adatvédelmi biztosok 31. éves nemzetközi konferenciájához kapcsolódóan rendezik meg.

Az egyetemi szféra, a fogyasztói és a digitális jogok, valamint a munka világa prominens képviselői és szakértői vitatják meg köztisztviselőkkel és az üzleti szektorral, hogy miként lehet növelni az adatvédelmi tudatosságot a globális közösségben, és hogyan lehet elősegíteni a civil társadalom részvételét azokban a döntéshozatali folyamatokban, amelyek jobb adatvédelmi és magánélet-védelmi normák globális elfogadásához vezetnek.

Internet Governance Forum - United States


The first IGF-USA will take place on October 2, 2009 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The IGF-USA is a multistakeholder effort to raise awareness about Internet governance issues and to contribute to awareness about the Internet Governance Forum. IGF-USA is a one day forum to engage civil society, government, technologists/researchers, industry and academia in discussions about topics that are being deliberated at a global level regarding governance of the Internet, including management of critical Internet resources, privacy, cyber security, access, openness/freedom of expression, child online safety, capacity building and development. At the IGF-USA, like the IGF itself, all parties participate on an equal footing, and through identifying and discussing issues, participants help to broaden understanding and identify possible best practices that can inform global decisions that affect the Internet.

  • When?: Friday, October 2, 2009
  • Where?: Center for Strategic and International Studies, 1800 K Street, NW, Washington DC. The CSIS location is one block from the Farragut West station on the Orange and Blue lines. Take the 18th Street exit and walk north to the corner of 18th and K streets. CSIS is also just a few blocks away from the Farragut North station on the Red line.

International Civil Society Coalition To Discuss Global Privacy Standards

The Public Voice, an international civil society coalition, will discuss: Global Privacy Standards in a Global World; during its conference on November 3, 2009 in Madrid, Spain, to be held in conjunction with the 31st Annual International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners.

Prominent advocates and experts from the academic, consumer, digital rights and labor communities will discuss with public officials and the business sector how to raise privacy awareness in the global community; and how to promote civil society participation in decision making processes towards the adoption of better privacy and data protection standards globally.

Weltweite Koalition der Zivilgesellschaft diskutiert globale Standards zum Schutz der Privatsphäre

‘Public Voice’, die größte weltweite Koalition der Zivilgesellschaft, wird “Globale Standards zum Schutz der Privatsphäre in einer globalen Welt” im Rahmen einer eigenen Konferenz am 3. November 2009 in Madrid, Spanien, diskutieren. Die Konferenz findet im zeitlichen Zusammenhang mit der 31. Internationalen Konferenz der Datenschutzbeauftragten statt.

Coalizão da sociedade civil internacional se reúne para discutir padrões globais de Privacidade

A Public Voice, maior coalizão de organizações da sociedade civil global, vai discutir o tema “Padrões globais de privacidade no mundo globalizado" em conferência a ser realizada no dia 3 de novembro de 2009 em Madri (Espanha). O evento acontecera junto com a 31a. Conferência Internacional Anual de Comissariados de Proteção de Dados e Privacidade.

Ativistas e especialistas de destaque - provindos da academia, de associações de consumidores, de organizações e movimentos de direitos digitais e de associações de profissionais - discutirão com autoridades públicas e representantes do setor privado sobre como conscientizar a comunidade global a respeito do tema da privacidade e como promover maior participação da sociedade civil em processos decisórios que envolvam a adoção de melhores padrões de proteção a dados pessoais e à privacidade, em nível global.

全世界最大的非政府组织联盟-公众之声-将于2009年11月3日在西班牙马德里,时值第三十一届国际个人数据与隐私权保护专员会议之际,共商“全球隐私权保护标准”的议题。
来自学界、消费者保护、数字权利保护、劳工权利保护等领域的重要活动家和权威将与各国政府官员和商界领袖讨论,如何在全球范围提高公众的隐私权保护意识,如何促进非政府组织参与决策过程,以便更完善的隐私权和个人数据保护标准在全球的施行。
会议将首先回顾隐私权和人权保护在近期的发展以及世界上主要的隐私权保护运动。欧洲议会副主席拉布尼蒂斯先生将受邀对近期的发展进行评论。

Standards mondiaux de respect de la vie privée: la société civile internationale ouvre le débat

The Public Voice;, la plus large coalition internationale de la société civile pour les questions liées à Internet, consacre une conférence aux “Standards mondiaux de respect de la vie privée dans un monde globalisé”. Organisée en lien avec la 31e Conférence internationale annuelle des commissaires à la protection des données et de la vie privée, cette conférence “The Public Voice” aura lieu le 3 novembre 2009 à Madrid, Espagne.

D’éminents défenseurs et experts de la vie privée des secteurs de l’académie, de la consommation, des droits numériques et du travail dialogueront avec des représentants des autorités publiques et autres organismes, pour identifier les moyens de sensibiliser la communauté mondiale aux enjeux liés à la protection des données personnelles et de la vie privée, et de promouvoir la participation de la société civile dans les processus de décision visant à adopter de meilleurs standards pour assurer cette protection dans un espace mondialisé.
